LearnNow BC Wins a Gold Medal

The week of October 15 marked the 15th annual GTEC - Government Technology Exhibition and Conference. GTEC is held in Ottawa and is aimed at information technology professionals from across Canada. Each year, as part of this conference, distinction awards that recognize federal, provincial, municipal and national contributions are awarded.

The Province of British Columbia walked away with a prestigious national gold medal award in the Human Dimension category. Specifically, this award went to LearnNow BC, British Columbia's virtual school. This particular award recognizes the outstanding contribution of an individual or a team that uses technology to address universal accessibility challenges, learning programs, or organizational change initiatives.

This is the second time that LearnNow BC has been recognized nationally this year, winning a bronze medal for innovative management from the Institute of Public Administration of Canada in August and now receiving gold from a technology perspective at GTEC.

LearnNow BC offers students the opportunity to combine traditional classrooms, textbooks and after-school study sessions with video lessons organized over the internet, online tutors and access to virtual libraries.

Initially launched on October 21, 2006, LearnNow BC has had a tremendously active and successful first year.

The McCord Museum Online Collection

The McCord Museum is a public research and teaching museum dedicated to the preservation, study, diffusion and appreciation of Canadian history. The museum is an incredible resource for students, teachers, parents and people interested in Canadian history. The online collection has a total of 135, 000 items.

The museum also offers a personal space called “My McCord” where users can store images they have found through searching the collection to personal folders. Using personal folders, “My McCord” enables the annotation of collection images, the uploading of personal images and the creation of slideshows.

For example, have a look at the photograph of Louis Riel, a hand-sewn quilt from 1726, this painting by Emily Carr, or a twentieth century, Nunavimiut glass-bead pendant.
