Ministry of Education
Capital Management Branch
Boards of education are required to submit capital plans to the Ministry of Education every year.
The annual plans outline boards’ priorities for capital investment in their school facilities over a 5-year period.
The Capital Management Branch assists school districts with the development of these long-term capital plans for:
- new and replacement schools
- expansions and renovations to existing schools
- school buses
The branch allocates funding for new capital projects and manages approvals for school construction projects through Project Identification reports (PIRs), Project Definition Reports (PDRs) and capital project agreements. These define a project’s scope, schedule and budget. The branch then tracks capital projects from the design stage through to completion. The Branch collects Scope and Cost Review reports for completed projects.
The Capital Management Branch also manages the Seismic Mitigation Program, which is currently underway across the province to make schools safe in the event of an earthquake.
