Governance & Accountability Division
The Governance & Accountability Division is responsible for all matters of governance, curriculum and education standards related to Kindergarten to Grade 12 schooling in British Columbia. The province’s K-12 education system comprises:
- public schools
- independent schools
- offshore schools
- homeschooling
Responsibilities are shared across five branches.
- Aboriginal Education Enhancements Branch manages initiatives, policies and procedures related to the education of Aboriginal students, including:
- integrating Aboriginal content in the provincial curriculum
- facilitating development and implementation of Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreements
- collaborating with Aboriginal organizations, bands, tribal councils, First Nations, Métis and the federal government on matters concerning the education of Aboriginal students
Diversity & Equity Branch works to:
- enable all students to maximize their potential and improve their achievement
- support students who learn in different ways or come from diverse cultural or socio-economic backgrounds
- English as a Second Language
- Safe, Caring and Orderly Schools
- Special Education
Related responsibilities include:

Governance & Legislation Branch is responsible for all Ministry of Education legislation and ensuring that education policies and initiatives have the necessary legislative authority. Specific responsibilities include:
- Library Act
- Manual of School Law
- School Calendar
- Student Appeals

Learning Initiatives Branch manages programs related to:
The branch also serves as the Ministry of Education’s primary liaison with the Ministry of Attorney General.
- curriculum development, maintenance and support, including learning resources, expected student outcomes and classroom assessment
- Graduation Programs, including graduation requirements and related policies, adult graduation, career planning and industry training
- sustainability education, including Green Schools initiatives and environmental learning resources
Office of the Inspector of Independent Schools is responsible for:
- registering, inspecting and classifying independent schools
- certification of independent school teachers
- administrating Offshore School BC Programs
- homeschooling policies
