Governance & Accountability Division


Deputy Minister

The Governance & Accountability Division is responsible for matters related to governance of and legislation for the public school system, independent schools, homeschooling and offshore schools.

The division also provides support through the Ministry Correspondence Office (MCO) to the minister and deputy minister, ministry staff, and other government officials.

Governance & Accountability serves as the primary liaison with the Ministry of Attorney General on legal matters and litigation involving the Ministry of Education.

In addition, the division works with school districts to develop guidelines for and monitor progress on the key components of the ministry's accountability framework, including accountability contracts, school planning councils, Aboriginal education enhancement agreements and district reviews.

The division also oversees those program areas with responsibility for policy development and initiatives regarding:

  • diversity
  • English as a second language
  • safe caring and orderly schools
  • special education
  • Aboriginal education
  • French minority-language education
  • French language programs, (français langue premiere, français langue second-immersion and Core French)

Governance & Accountability also provides provincial co-ordination of the federally-funded Official Languages in Education Program (OLEP) and the national programs offered through the Council of Ministers of Education, Canada.

These program areas work in partnership with and provide advice to school districts and other provincial ministries on social policy issues that have significance for K-12 public education.
