3.0 KEY FINDINGS

3.2 Characteristics of SSA Scholarship Winners

In order to develop a profile of SSA scholarship winners, various demographic information was collected from respondents.

In general, most SSA scholarship winners are male, earning over $1,000 per month in income, do not have any physical or mental disabilities, are not First Nations and most SSA scholarship winners’ parents/guardians completed their high school education or more. Characteristics of SSA scholarship winners are highlighted in Table 3-2A and include the following:

  • virtually all (96.6%) of SSA scholarship winners surveyed were male;
  • scholarship winners were most likely to report an average monthly income of $1,001 to $2,000 (51.7%) or $2,001 to $3,000 (25.3%);
  • the vast majority of respondents indicated that they were not First Nations (95.4%);
  • only 2.3% reported that they had a physical or mental disability that limited their daily activity in some way;
  • most (86.2%) respondents reported that one or both of their parents/guardians had completed high school;
  • notable proportions of SSA scholarship winners also indicated that one or both of their parents/guardians had completed college/university (43.7%) and/or an apprenticeship (32.1%).
