Frequently Asked Questions

This section offers some general information on the current work situation and on what we should expect as we enter the next millenium. You may be interested in an on-line tutorial for work seekers, or a quiz about modern work, or knowing "what's hot" for the next decade.

New attitudes, skills and knowledge are required to succeed in one's working life. As a result, "career self-management" is emerging as a means not only of surviving, but of thriving in this new economy.

What does career self-management mean?

Essentially, career self-management involves taking responsibility for your own career development. It means:

  • not relying on any business, organization, government or union to look after your interests.
  • making a commitment to lifelong learning so you will keep developing new skills.
  • being able to market yourself effectively to potential employers and clients.
  • creating and recognizing opportunities for work.
  • taking responsibility for your personal financial security and work-related benefits.
  • learning to be adaptable and flexible in an era of rapid change.
  • taking risks, being creative, innovative, and courageous in the face of uncertainty.
  • learning how to focus on hope and optimism during times of chaos and transition.
  • thinking of yourself as self-employed, as being "your own boss," even when you are working for someone else. You are in charge of your career all the time, every day, in every situation.

Workers can rely on 'skills security' rather than long term job security. Keeping you skills up-to-date and marketing them will help you to find and keep work.
