Parent Strategies

Back to Making the Transition

  1. Explore secondary school programs that may meet the needs of your teen, such as Secondary School Apprenticeship, Co-op, and Career Preparation programs; Langley's School of Fine Arts; Abbotsford's Career Technical Centre; and Parksville's Adventure Tourism program.

  2. Ask potential employers or post-secondary instructors what skills and knowledge are required for the work in which your teen is interested. What training or experience does your teen need to be competitive in the work place? How will they achieve their goals?

  3. Encourage your teen to make time to volunteer at a school or in your community, re-inforcing the idea that employers want to hire well-rounded people with a variety of skills.

  4. Encourage your teen to tour interesting colleges or training facilities. Tip: do advance research, call ahead, take notes, talk to students and faculty.

  5. Your teen may appreciate help rehearsing the dialogue needed for him/her to telephone college program advisors or potential employers for specific information.

  6. Find out about career conferences, college open houses, and career & education fairs in your community. Encourage your teen to attend with close friends and discuss findings afterwards.
