- Actively listen to your teen's likes and dislikes. Help your teen discover and pursue his/her own strengths, talents, and dreams.
- If you have any questions about careers and what it takes to achieve success, talk with a school counsellor or career educators. School personnel are there to help parents as well as students.
- Teens may complete some self-awareness activities at school. Ask them to show you what they have done (might be a collage, computer print out, interest quiz or a portfolio) and explain what they have learned about themselves and how it relates to future work.
- Encourage your teen to get involved - in school activities, community activities or other pursuits. Employers are looking for people with good communication, leadership and self-management skills.
- Seek out people who work in your teen's area of interest. If you are not sure of a contact, phone the local association, chamber of commerce or school career contact, or look in the Yellow pages. Help your teen set up an informational interview and think of questions ahead of time. Many people will gladly share their experiences with teens.
