Career and Personal Goals

Back to Identifying Options

People with goals succeed because they know where they are going. Once teens have researched various options, they will need to set some goals to work towards and decide how they are going to achieve them. Career goals are the things a person might want to achieve over time (e.g., gaining employment at a sports store, completing a diploma). Personal goals are things that you want to achieve to make all aspects of your life and work well. For instance, a person who values the outdoors may choose to limit their occupational choices to those available in an area where they wish to live, or they may be content in an urban setting so long as their occupation allows them to work outdoors. To achieve that goal an individual would choose an occupation or work that allows them to live in an area they desire.
