A skill is a practised or natural ability to do something well and can be developed through a variety of activities. Some experts suggest that each person has up to 700 different skills. In today's employment market, it is important to be able to identify your skills and know how to apply them to a particular task or work. The three main areas that abilities fall under are technical skills, self-management skills and transferable skills.
Technical skills are specific areas of technical knowledge and ability that a person has been trained to do either through formal education or on-the-job training.
Self-management skills, part of a person's personality, allow a person to cope or deal with certain situations (organizational, motivational or inter-personal skills). They are skills that are hard to have specific training for but that can be developed through self-improvement.
Transferable skills are skills developed through everyday experiences that can be applied to a variety of work situations. For instance when a teen works co-operatively on a project at school he or she has developed a skill that is transferable to any work situation.
