Variety of Activities and Experiences

Back to Identifying Options

There are a variety of activities that can help to develop knowledge and skills necessary to gain employment. Work place training is often called the "hidden" educational system. An orientation session with a new employer clearly establishes the variety of tasks and responsibilities that will be learned on the job. Many people combine a variety of educational experiences to upgrade credentials or train for a specific occupation. Volunteer work offers individuals a chance to experience an occupation as well as to demonstrate their initiative and develop transferable skills. Clubs and sports involvement not only provide recreation, but also helps develop work skills outside a work place setting. Travelling allows individuals to experience different cultures and learn about work in other countries. It also develops self-reliance skills - a must for the 21st century - and could spawn work interests at home.
