Technology and Knowledge Based Industries

Back to Identifying Opportunities

Technology is the single biggest factor that has impacted work in Canada and the world. While there are still many jobs in the resource sector, how work is performed has significantly changed. A higher level of knowledge is required to perform most work. In 1963, for instance, the truck mechanic's repair manual was about 5,000 pages. That manual is now on 45,000 pages long.

Technology has eliminated some jobs while creating others. For instance, a mill worker might be replaced by robotics, but the plant will require people to design, operate and maintain that technology. In addition, technology has changed how workers work and the skill sets that they might need. For instance, the factory workers may no longer physically manipulate the sheet of steel. Instead, they manipulate the data used to control the equipment that fabricates the steel. Look at the web sites below to investigate the shift in the economy.
