Back to Identifying Opportunities

People are employed in all sectors of the economy. As people retire or circumstances change work becomes available. There is little growth in some sectors of the economy especially, Canada's traditional resource-based industries. The most significant growth in BC over the last four years has been in service jobs and self-employment. Service work includes the categories of retail and wholesale, professional scientific and technical, health and social assistance and accommodation. Self-employed workers now comprise 20 percent of BC's labour force.

When working with your teen, consider that within any industry there is a need for just about every occupation. Consider, for instance, that your teen loved the entertainment business, but wanted to be an electrician. Is there a match for your teen? Yes. Not only is entertainment a growing business, but electricity is a large part of the entertainment industry. GM Place, for example, has several resident electricians just to meet the demands of the equipment used at the variety of sports and entertainment event. Similiar matches between interests and careers can be found in many fields.
