In addition, give some serious thought to combining your passion for Motion
Pictures and/or Music with the skills required of the New Media industry to broaden
your career opportunities.

Volunteer
Focus
on strengthening your area(s) of creative expertise.
- Volunteer for community groups
or organizations which will permit you to use those skills. Design posters for
school/community functions, offer to help with computer classes, volunteer to
operate lighting and/or sound equipment for local productions, offer to write
for the school/community newspaper.

Volunteer at a radio
station, television studio, video production company or recording company.

Work or volunteer
with organizations or companies where you will gain computer experience.
Do
Your Research
Learn
as much as possible about all facets of the New Media Industry.
Include digital photography,
film production, drawing, graphics design, computer illustration, creative writing,
advertising, marketing, communications, sound enhancement and visual effects within
your background of knowledge.
Familiarize
yourself with a variety of computer communications systems.
Keep
yourself updated on new computer programs and technological innovations.
Learn as much as you can about digital technology.
Experiment
with computer applications.
Try new ways of using the technology to accomplish tasks.
Go
to School
Attend
an educational facility which offers programs in communications, and multi-media
production.
Unless you are looking
to develop a specific career for yourself (such as animation), specialization
may be limiting. Take extra courses in film production, music production, animation,
marketing and computer applications. Although your personal interest may be focused
in one particular area, the industry is looking for individuals with a broad understanding
of the entire field.
Some
training institutions have set up educational partnerships with industry professionals.

for a work experience or job training program.

a personal portfolio containing samples of your work.
Include a recent
resume, drawings, writing, designs; film, video and music production credits.
