Courses for Post-Secondary Admission in BC

Guide to University & College Prerequisites

A NOTE ON ADMISSION TO POST-SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS

There are three different ways of being admitted to a post-secondary institution:

  1. On the basis of high school course selection and performance;

Students seeking admission to a college or a university directly upon high school graduation (Grade 12) would normally use this option. Course selection as well as marks play an important role in the admissions process.

  1. As a mature student;

Students two years beyond normal high school graduation age (21 and over) may be admitted to a college, (even if they have not graduated from high school), make up college admission requirements, and proceed to take post-secondary courses to graduate from a college or transfer to a university.

  1. On the basis of college/university transfer programs;

Students attending college who have completed a minimum number (varies between 15 to 30) of course credits that are transferable to a university degree program will normally be admitted on the basis of their post secondary performance. High school course selection and performance will not be used in determining admission status. However, students will normally be required to submit their high school transcript; this is to enable the university to assess if and when required, that program specific or course specific 11 and 12 prerequisites have been successfully completed completed at either high school or college. Each university sets its own policies for transferable courses and grade levels.
