Courses for Post-Secondary Admission in BC

Guide to University & College Prerequisites

North Island College

A. Acceptable for General Admission:

Principles of Mathematics 11 and English 12. Consult Counsellor or Advisors for information about the use of Applied Academics courses towards program admissions not covered below.

B. Acceptable for Calculation of GPA for Admissions:

Not applicable. Specific grades (C, C+ or B) are required for certain courses. More details are available in the North Island College Calendar.

C. Prerequisites for Specific Programs:

English:

  • English 12 meets the prerequisites for all North Island College courses: there are specific grade requirements for certain courses (C+, B).
  • Technical and Professional Communications 12 meets the English admissions requirements for the following NIC programs (minimum grade of C+ required):
  • Computer Science & Technology, Cook Training Program, Drafting, Early Childhood Care and Education, Electricity, Electronics Technician, Heating Technician, Home Support/Resident Care, Mechanics (Automotive Service Technician and Heavy Duty/Commercial Transport), Office Administration, Renewable Resources Environmental Assessment, Wood Products Technology, Tourism Food & Beverage, and Tourism Resort Management.
  • Technical and Professional Communications 12 meets the English Admissions requirements for North Island College ENG 160.

Mathematics:

  • Principles of Mathematics 11 meets the Math prerequisites for the following NIC courses:
  • CHE 060, CHE 103, MAT 066, MAT 115, MAT 162, MAT 163, PHY 050, PHY 060, the Business Administration Certificate and the Computer Information Certificate.
  • Principles of Mathematics 12 meets the Math prerequisites for the following NIC courses:
  • CHE 110, MAT 102, MAT 151, MAT 181, PHY 060, PHY 100, PHY 120, the Business Administration program and the Computer Science & Technology program.
  • Applications of Mathematics 11 meets the prerequisites for the following NIC courses:
  • Heating Technician, Mechanics, and Office Administration.
  • Applications of Mathematics 12 meets the prerequisites for the following NIC courses:
  • CHE 060, CHE 103, MAT 066, MAT 115, MAT 162, MAT 163, PHY 050.
  • One of Principles of Mathematics 11, Principles of Mathematics 12 or Applications of Mathematics 12 will meet the prerequisites for the following programs:
  • Drafting, Electricity, Electronics Technician, Nursing, Renewable Resources Environmental Assessment, Wood Products Technology, Tourism Food & Beverage, and Tourism Resort Management.

Physics:

  • Consult the Registrar’s Office for the latest information on Applications of Physics 11/12.
