Since the creation of Information Technology 11/12 two important trends
have developed. First, IT's popularity has soared beyond anyone's wildest expectations and
the numbers of students taking the courses have exploded. Secondly, these students have
increasingly diverse expectations, experiences, opportunities and computer background. On
April 29th and 30th, attendees of the Information Technology Implementation Forum will
attempt to develop the IT program to address these challenges.
The Forum participants will be divided into three focus groups. The groups
will concentrate on the three C's of implementation: Content, Context, and Conditions.
Thus each group will have an opportunity to share solutions to the issues surrounding IT
implementation. The information gathered at the forum will later be assembled, edited, and
eventually published as a resource for IT 11/12 implementation.
Those in the Content group will focus on the learning outcomes as defined
in the IRP's. The group will share examples of materials that teachers can use in a
typical lab setting. These resources will then be indexed for publication.
The Context focus group will identify the elements of a desirable learning
situation. This will range from analyzing successful facility plans to gathering examples
of teaching strategies best designed to meeting generic learning outcomes. This group will
also create templates for the use of extension activities that would enrich the students'
learning experiences.
The participants discussing Conditions will focus on the learning
opportunities beyond the core curriculum. This includes industry certification, advance
placement and external enrichment. Cross-curricular links will be identified, detailed and
documented. Want to get connected? Check on our website (www.bced.gov.bc.ca/cfaa) for more information,

Has talk begun about what you'll be doing this summer? How about planning
a trip to Vancouver Island and the Applications of Mathematics Summer Institute? August
25-27th, Applications of Mathematics educators will be convening in Nanaimo to share their
experiences in a series of workshops. All of the sessions will use hands on instructional
strategies to allow teachers to experience how they can connect mathematical applications
with the curriculum at various grade levels.
