1) IT FORUM

It has been two years since the IRP's for Information Technology 11/12 were first released. Great excitement surrounded the new course and the broad potential that it provided. A couple of years into their implementation, a number of needs have become apparent.

"IT 11 and 12 are quite different from the courses they replaced," explains Gus Fraser, a leader in IT education. "Their intent is different; their requirements are different; their resources are different; and their material and equipment needs are different." If you are getting the impression that IT is a dramatic shift in technology education, then you are correct. The IRP's reflected this change; however, they remained quite general and lacked a clarity in prescribed learning outcomes.

On April 29th and 30th, many of the movers and shakers of the Information Technology 11/12 courses will converge on Burnaby's Schou Education Centre in a massive initiative to smoothen the implementation of the IRP's. An estimated 100 participating teachers will be broken into a series of focus groups that will wrestle with the key issues of successful IT implementation.

According to Fraser, the Forum's goal is quite specific. "There is a pressing need to have a resource to draw upon that will clarify and expand the current program, linking IT to the various industry training programs, post secondary requirements, and other student opportunities."

Due to the vast scope of issues, efforts to identify the key concerns and highlight possible solutions have been scheduled for the next couple of months. As sponsors of the IT Forum, the Center For Applied Academics and Open School will be hosting on-line discussion groups beginning in February. These discussions will form the foundation for the Forum focus groups.

If this seems like an educational opportunity that you don't want to miss, then you are encouraged to register for the IT Forum by emailing Gus Fraser ( gfraser@schou.sd.41.bc.ca ). Further information can be had by downloading the information file at www.schou.sd41.bc.ca or by surfing the Open School site at www.openschool.bc.ca/itforum

2) APPLIED ACADEMICS PARENT BROCHURE

Tired of your kids knowing more about their course selection than you? Is your son or daughter facing some difficult academic decisions in the next couple of months? Do you find yourself unsure of their options, and wondering what type of advice you should give? Perhaps you have a friend in such a position? We may be able to help.

The Center For Applied Academics has teamed up with the BC Confederation of Parent Advisory Councils (BCCPAC) to produce an information brochure entitled "Parents & Applied Academics". The brochure gives a brief description of the various Applied Academics courses, and covers all of the most frequently asked questions. It explains where parents can turn to get more information about such critical questions as post-secondary acceptance of Applied Academics courses and local course availability.

A copy of this brochure is free for the asking! Just call 1877 293-CFAA or email cfaa0010@bcitvm.bcit.ca

3) PREPARING TO TAKE THE LEAP

Ever wonder what happened to the graduating class of 1996... 1994...1993? How did those students adapt to the rigors of post secondary schooling? Have they been able to find rewarding employment? School District 23, the Okanagan University College and the Nexus Consortium did more than wonder; they researched.

As part of an ambitious study commissioned by the Okanagan School District, researchers Reed Early and Garth Homer directed a survey of 2,019 students who have graduated since 1993. Their objective was to study the factors in transition success. Their findings were not only quite interesting, but provide some helpful suggestions for easing student transition.

Those graduates who were the most satisfied with the secondary school experience and most pleased with the preparation that their school provided shared a number of commonalties. These satisfied students had high self-reported attendance, participated in work experience programs, received job information, and set personal career goals.

The study recommended some helpful tips that help students make the leap to the post high school world.

  1. Information about job opportunities and career materials are crucial for transition success.

  2. Student should be exposed to work experience and career related curriculum to heighten their transition preparation.

  3. A greater variety of educational experiences and teaching methods helps students make smoother transitions.

Applied courses can play an important role in fulfilling these recommendations. The contextual approach of Applied Academics exposes students to real life examples of how the curriculum is actually used in the work world. The student is shown a diversity of learning experiences, and develops heightened problem solving skills. Lastly, Applied Academics dovetails nicely with career education programs (call 1 877 293-CFAA for a free Career Ed. brochure).
