Provincial Student Assessment Program

The ministry manages an assessment program that systematically gathers information from a variety of sources to determine the extent to which B.C. students are achieving the knowledge, skills and understanding prescribed in the provincial curriculum.

B.C. students participate in three types of assessments:

  • The Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) is administered annually to all B.C. students in grades 4 and 7. It tests student ability in Reading Comprehension, Writing and Numeracy.

    FSA Administration Dates

  • Grade 10, 11 and 12 Provincial Examinations certify the performance of B.C. students graduating from Grade 12.
  • National and International Assessments test a variety of subject areas. Samples of B.C. students in various age ranges write these tests which compare student achievement relative to other provinces and countries.
