Since the item pools from which the items for the 1995 BC Assessment of Mathematics and Science had already gone through extensive reviews, piloting, and a large number had been used in a previous BC assessments, and since items had to be exactly replicated to enable reporting of change information, it was not considered necessary to fully repeat the item review/selection process of the previous assessments. Rather, smaller committes were formed to verify that selected items would be as acceptable as measures of student performance in 1995 as they were in 1990 and 1991. Also, since the TIMSS item pool had also been extensively piloted (provincially, nationally, and internationally) and items could not be changed, the major focus of the review of those items was a verification of their curricular appropriateness in the BC milieu.
