Information about Graduated Adults

The third phase of the ‘Education Guarantee’ will come into effect September 1, 2008. This phase will see free courses for graduated adults who enrol in continuing education or face-to-face programs. Provincial funding for free courses will be limited to the subject areas of computer studies, education and career planning, English, First Nation studies, mathematics, sciences and social studies. Here is the list of tuition free courses [32 KB] that will be funded if offered through continuing education or face-to-face.

Phase 1 of the Education Guarantee was tuition free courses for all students through the Province’s virtual school, LearnNowBC. This continues unchanged. Phase 2 began in January, 2008 and includes free ABE courses to graduated adults who choose to take courses through the post-secondary system.

Procedures and guidelines for school districts regarding Phase 3 of the Education Guarantee:

  • The Board of Education must pass a motion that it intends to provide tuition-free education to graduated adults, and notify the ministry when it has done this. For boards that have advised the Ministry of their motion in 2007, this is sufficient.
  • Students must be ordinarily resident in BC.
